Scheduling and executing production programs in today’s variant-rich manufacturing industry is a complex task. Production set-ups can be conducted in a variety of ways - in job shop scenarios, in batch lots within line organizations, or even in sequence orders with one-piece-flows rules - which means manufacturing companies require advanced, individualized solutions to cut through this complexity to achieve maximum efficiency.

To make Production Scheduling even more complex, companies with high levels of vertical integration, different forms of production can take place within a single production facility or hub.

In addition, the rules and constraints in production planning become more complex and varied relative to how efficient the set-up. Multiple constraints, strategies, and rules need to be implemented in order to minimize overall production costs and maximize production output. Concurrently, delivery dates and windows need to be fulfilled, stock levels need to be reduced, and production and supply flexibility must be top priority in order to react to short-term changes or variations in the production process. Communicating the results of new or altered planning restrictions must then be distributed cross-organizationally in order to give suppliers accurate production forecasts and allow logistics planners and managers the space to organize the transportation network and coordinate operational transport planning.
